Murattu Kaalai (2012) Movie Review:
It is indeed a matter of pride for superstar Rajinikanth – while he
continues to reign supreme at the box-office even today, his yesteryear
hits are also being remade with wonderful results! After Billa, yet another Rajinikanth film, Murattu Kaalai (also
referred to as Murattukkalai), is being remade. Starring Rajinikanth
and Rathi Agnihotri in the lead, the film was a rage in the 80s.
The remake stars Sundar C. and Sneha in the lead roles. Suman, who re-emerged in Kollywood with Sivaji, will play the villain (the role played by charismatic Jaishankar in the original). Vivek and Thyagu will reprise the roles of Surali Rajan and “Thengai” Sreenivasan respectively.
Since the original film is 25 years old, minor script modifications have been made to suit modern tastes. But the evergreen song ‘Pothuvaga Emmanasu Thangam’ and Murattu Kalai are inseparable – so the filmmakers have retained it in a slightly remixed avataar.
Gunanithi Amritham, who gave the hits Madurai Meenakshi and Manasu Rendum Puthusu 13 years ago, is the producer of this remake. K. Selvabharathy is the director. Srikanth Deva composes the music and Santario (of Dishyum fame) is the cinematographer.
The Plot
Kaalayan (Sundar) and his four brothers are inseperable. The village's big shot Varadharajan (Suman) and Kaalayan are at loggerheads. The spat becomes miserable when Kaalayan refuses to marry Varadharajan's sister. Meanwhile Bhuvana (Sneha), who is on the run from Varadharajan and his men seeks Kaalayan's help and the two fall in love. This brings in more trouble for Kaalayan so how is he going to solve all these problems? Watch out...
Performance & Techniques

Performance & Techniques
Though the film is a remake of Rajinikanth's most popular film from the
80's, this version ends up as a typical masala film. Moreover it looks
like a combination of Sundar C's earlier flicks like Veerappu, Sandai, Thee and Perumal.
The best part of the remake is that Sundar C. has not tried to imitate
Rajinikanth blindly. Suman gives an average performance while Sneha is
passable. Over all the newer version of Murattu Kaalai works to an extent as it has all the elements required for a commercial pot boiler.
