Any
person who grew up in the 1990's would not forget the happy-go-lucky
movie, “Ullaithai Alli Thaa” directed by Sundar C. He brings in the same
humour here in his 24th directorial venture, “Kalakalappu @ Masala
Café”.
Fun unlimited
Starring people whose mere presence can tickle your funny bone, the
movie is set in Kumabakonam. The story is about two brothers who work to
restore and renew their once thriving ancestral restaurant and unite
with their loved ones.
The movie quite literally
takes off after the interval when Santhanam enters the film. His
one-liners put you in splits. Vimal as the elder son who works to
restore the business does a fine job. Shiva's humour is an added
advantage to the movie. Oviya and Anjali's roles have limited scope for
acting, for which they make up with glamour. John Vijay as the villain
is unexpected and he carries off the role in a humorously serious way.
The
big asset of the movie is perhaps the cinematography by U.K. Senthil
Kumar and editing by Praveen K.L. and Srikanth N.B. The usual clichéd
locations also seem new thanks to the picturisation. Songs by Vijay
Ebenezer are worth noting.
The movie lacks the
fluidity in the screenplay in parts and gets predictable at times.
Nevertheless, if you have plans to catch up with your friends in the
weekend, this movie can make you laugh your lungs out.
Bottomline: Watch without much expectation and you are sure to be entertained!
